World View of Earth Page 1

Hurricane_Irene_NASA.jpg

This is a real photograph of Earth, taken by a NASA satellite flying 22,236 miles above Earth, on Saturday August 27, 2011.
There you can see all of South America and all of Central America and most of North America...
You can see all of the United States (of America) and you can see all of Hurricane Irene!
The Storm is 500 miles in diameter, spinning alongside the entire East Coast...

Earth is a World, it is a Planet flying and spinning through Space... Outer Space... The Universe...
We live on Earth, we are fortunate...because no one knows if there is any other Life "Out There" in Outer Space...
But most of the time, our time... we don't think about Earth as a World, as a Planet, as our Home Planet...

We think about our Neighborhood... and School, and our Family and Friends, and the Mall...
We have Clubs, and Teams to cheer about, and City Newspapers with headlines, and Online Groups, and Facebook and Twitter,
and our iPhones and TV and Radio...

Sometimes we look up and see the Moon at night and we know that it changes shape during the month...
We see stars as tiny points of light, but we learn in school that those tiny points of light are really Huge... Suns, like our own Sun
that gives us day-light and warmth and makes plants grow so we have food to eat...
But those stars are so far away, that we can't imagine what those tiny dots of light do and where they are and why...?

We got "stuff to do down here, everyday..." and I agree...
But it is helpful to know and sometimes think about the Big "Out There..." to look up and wonder "What is going on?" and "Why?"...

Scientists do that, Astronomers and Astronauts, but also other people, we the people do that too...
We have been doing that for thousands of years...

to be continued...
